Milan Menswear Fashion Week – Top 5 Shows

Valentino

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli’s (Creative Directors) menswear fashion show debut certainly was a success. The show was centered around key wardrobe pieces from the trench coat, the leather jacket to the black suit. All I can say is that I will definitely be sporting some Valentino next winter.

Dolce and Gabbana

If the set did not give you a hint then the soundtrack confirmed it. Opera was the theme for this seasons show. Red velvet, embroidered capes, silk pyjama-like trousers, it all just fell into place. Even the occasional grunge model dressed in a t-shirt, jeans and distressed boots. There is always a twist. Domenice Dolce and Stefano Gabbana did not look to any book or film for inspiration, it was simply family. They looked at the clothes their fathers had tailored many years ago. So why wouldn’t you want to buy into Dolce and Gabbana’s own family history. I know i would!

Jil Sander

Black leather and knit jumpers – Quite an unusual combination but somehow it all made sense. It is almost as if Raf Simons (Creative Director) was creating a character from the old black and white movies as the models carried out news papers and what looked like leather lunch bags. The basement-like scenery made me think of a dark character in a lane way with no way out. Very spooky but oh so fashionable.

Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton decided not to stage a show this season. Even though the shows are loved by the fashion folk, a presentation just somehow worked. There was no distraction, it was all entirely focused on the clothes. This collection is Burton’s male equivalent of the Alexander McQueen woman. One thing I noticed in the collection was the amount of tailoring involved. Which explains why Burton hired the esteemed tailor Huntsman from Saville Row to start a bespoke tailoring service for the brand. Alexander McQueen is certainly on their way to global domination.

Prada

Miuccia Prada yet again made everyones eyes pop out of their head with her collection this season. Not only did she send out a fantastically strict collection, she decided she would inject a little bit of celebrity this year. Hollywood actors such as Gary Oldman, Adrien Brody and Jamie Bell strut their stuff down the blood red carpet. As Mrs. Prada puts it, it was “a parody of male power”. It certainly got everyone excited for the Golden Globes which took place later that night.
