New York Spring 2013 Top 5 Shows

New York was great this year. Between collections of 1960’s glamour and innovative silhouettes and prints came covetable, wearable clothes. These 5 shows I have chosen as my favorite was a hard choice considering the extremely successful collections each designer delivered. Strong trends came through right from the start and the New York Fashion Week hype buzzed around the city better then ever before!

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

Words cannot describe the influence Diana Vreeland had towards the fashion world. Her vision, her drive, her enthusiasm, her passion created something new and interesting. Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel is a new documentary created by her granddaughter-in-law Lisa Immordino Vreeland. With interviews with designers Vreeland founded, like Manolo Blahnik and Oscar De La Renta and icons she created like Anjelica Huston and Lauren Hutton it is well worth a watch. Not only do you get an inside look into her glamorous lifestyle, but also a sense of what she was like as a person, colleague and friend. Her unique wit makes it a comical experience. She is dearly missed and we cannot thank her enough for what she did to the fashion world.

Altuzarra

Joseph Altuzarra has had no formal fashion training. No contacts, no money, no college degree; Just a guy with a dream. Somehow for Altuzarra it worked! After three major jobs with Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Givenchy it was finally time to set up his own company. Since then Altuzarra has become an overnight sensation with his Fall 2012 collection catching every editors eye, launched a range for J Crew inspired by Lana Del Rey and won the 2011 CFDA/Vogue annual fund. Not bad for a guy with just a dream! This Saturday, Altuzarra will show his Spring/Summer 2013 collection, expectations are high and everyone who is anyone will be there. The future looks bright for Joseph Altuzarra.

EDUN

Things are looking up for EDUN. Not only does this brand keep on getting bigger and better, but it is now everywhere! Whether you open a magazine and see it’s advertising, walk into a store and see there covetable clothes or pass someone on the street in a look from the show. Now that they are in the loop with LVMH who own a 49% stake (and own powerhouses like Dior and Louis Vuitton) it seems EDUN is here to stay, for a long time. Founder Ali Hewson’s (yes, Bono’s wife) aim is to bring ‘positive change through its trading relationship with Africa and it’s positioning as a creative force in contemporary fashion.’

Here is a film of their A/W 12 ad campaign by Ryan McGinley

The Man Behind Dior

We waited more than a year for Dior to make their grand announcenent of their next deisgner. We then waited three months for his first collection to be unveiled and last Monday, we were in heaven. Raf Simons’ astonishing, elegant and just plain fabulous collection blew the fashion industry away with classic Dior silhouettes mixed with a slight modernism.

Here is an interview with the man himself…

J.W. Anderson

The future looks bright for J.W. Anderson. His innovative, eccentric and covetable designs have been on my wish list for quite some time now. Even though he may still be up and coming, he has come a long way. From working as a merchandiser at Prada, to starting his own menswear label and lately womens, Anderson has even impressed fashion editrix Anna Wintour. His resort 2013 collection is one of his best yet. With his unusual, new shapes and interesting choice of fabric, Andersons designs are far from the norm, but that’s what I love about him. He always gets me so excited to see what he will do next. Plus he’s Irish, just like me. Always a bonus!

eBay Online Fashion Week Finale Show

As we pondered over what shoe is best, inhaled large amounts of hairspray and re-touched our carefully planned outfits, Leanne Woodfull, Laura O Brien, Roisin Flanagan and myself waited nervously backstage for the show to start. As one of the four stylists that had been chosen to style eBay’s first ever fashion show in Europe, it was a daunting but exciting experience.

Backstage

As the show went on, I realised all of the hard work, the amount of effort and passion that went into this show suddenly became worth it. To hear the crowd cheering as we walked on stage and the many positive feedback that I recieved  was the icing on the cake. I realised this is Definitely the profession for me. Fashion here I come!!!

Here is a video of the stellar event that took place in Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin.

London Collections: Men Spring 2013

For the first time ever London has held its own menswear ‘Fashion Week’ entitled London Collections: Men. The successful weekend focused the fashion industry’s eyes on London, not only appreciating the exciting year they are having (The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics), but also the fantastic new talent that London is producing. It looks like London designers are the new best thing!

Here are my top 5 shows:

J.W Anderson

James Long

Jonathan Saunders

Oliver Spencer

E Tautz
