New York Spring 2013 Top 5 Shows

New York was great this year. Between collections of 1960’s glamour and innovative silhouettes and prints came covetable, wearable clothes. These 5 shows I have chosen as my favorite was a hard choice considering the extremely successful collections each designer delivered. Strong trends came through right from the start and the New York Fashion Week hype buzzed around the city better then ever before!

DVF Through Glass

Want to see behind the eyes of Fashion Week? Well now you can.

Google has asked designer Diane von Furstenberg, her team and models to wear a new camera they have brought out which is placed beside the eye to record exactly what someone can see. The Result? A fascinating video that even created butterflies in my stomach as one model made her way to open the show on front of 300 people! The work, dedication and glamour is finally visible to OUR eyes.

Altuzarra

Joseph Altuzarra has had no formal fashion training. No contacts, no money, no college degree; Just a guy with a dream. Somehow for Altuzarra it worked! After three major jobs with Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler and Givenchy it was finally time to set up his own company. Since then Altuzarra has become an overnight sensation with his Fall 2012 collection catching every editors eye, launched a range for J Crew inspired by Lana Del Rey and won the 2011 CFDA/Vogue annual fund. Not bad for a guy with just a dream! This Saturday, Altuzarra will show his Spring/Summer 2013 collection, expectations are high and everyone who is anyone will be there. The future looks bright for Joseph Altuzarra.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 – Top 5 Shows

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) took an unexpected turn this time. Instead of the established designers taking over the spotlight, it was all about the up-and-coming (with the exception of Marc Jacobs and Alex Wang of course). From Rodarte’s Australian dream, Proenza Schouler’s collection of protection, Altuzarra’s traveling warrior, Alexander Wang’s monochrome magic and Marc Jacobs’ fantasy of reality, this week certainly delivered a wide range of variety but with an overall tough edge. Here are some of my favorite looks from my pick of NYFW’s top 5 designers:

Marc Jacobs

Alexander Wang

Altuzarra

Proenza Schouler

The Fab Forties

From Donna Karan in New York, through Prada in Milan and to John Galliano in Paris, the 1940’s has been a clear trend for the Fall/Winter 2011 season. Starting in New York, Donna Karan’s show was full of Pearls, cinched waists and hair Bun’s, leading on with a neutral clean color palette. It felt like a fresh of breath air compared to all the other shows from NYC, it was needed. This season Karan has gone for a softer structure to the garment, opposed to her usual bold and defined shape. With Erickson Beamon designing the pearls which felt as the core of the collection, it came to no suprise that she named it ‘Pearls of Wisdom’.

Miuccia Prada was giving a clear message this season…..it’s all about the coat. The Minute the first model landed her Mary-Jane styled Python boots onto the two floored runway, it was obvious she was a Forties girl. Almost like she had just stepped off an airplane. As the color palette grew to a wider variety, we started to see more and more different fabrics used. Faux fur, being a big trend this season, was brushed and brushed to give off a fun and flamboyant look. Sequins closed the show giving off a fish scale look. She always knows how to please her crowd!

Prada Fall/Winter 2011

John Galliano was not present at his Fall/Winter 2011 show, but his designs sure made you feel he was. With a collection of only twenty looks, he was still able to squeeze out a Forties feeling. Starting off with Karlie Kloss wearing a tailored jacket with a wool pencil skirt and egg shaped top hat, it may not have been as styled as his previous shows, but it still gave off the Galliano effect. The collection may have given you the forties vibe, but the fabrics certainly did not. Like Prada, John used fabrics that you would not consider to have been apart of the forties era, like look two when a simple fur collared jacket was paired with a cream latex skirt or chains wrapped around the waist as a belt. It’s just the John Galliano touch.

Prabal Gurung

New designer alert ! Prabal Gurung hit the fame streets after celebrities like Blake Lively, Demi Moore and First Lady Michelle Obama started wearing his clothes. The Nepalese designer is based in New York and showed his first collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2009. Quite brave for a designer to start a high end label at the start of a recession, but so far he is proving that it can be done and is wowing the fashion industry with his astounding collections. Even Vogue’s Anna Wintour felt a need to run an article about him. This brand is going to grow rapidly before our eyes.
