This Season’s Statement

Every season there is one big statement dragged through all the shows of fashion week, but this time it seemed to suprise quite a lot of the fashion folk. The eyebrow. Brush, darken, define, just make it noticeable. Models like Arizona Muse and magazines like Vogue just can’t get enough. Even Prada’s fashion show sunglasses had big cartoon eyebrows swirling on the frame. Look to designers like Dior for inspiration, or if you really want to be noticed, take a look a Balenciaga’s fall 2011 show, and look out for the blue uni-brows. Yes you heard that correctly!

Alessandra Rich

New designer alert! Alessandra Rich may have only recently launched her label, but she has already proved to be a high fashion goddess for women. Rich uses rare but distinctive shapes with her cothes “establishing new codes for ready-to-wear fashion”. Exaggerating the waist is a key style used throughout her collections. You can find her pieces on Net-A-Porter.com that have appeared in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar. Things are looking up for this newly bred designer.

Pyjamas Anyone?

For this season (Spring/Summer 2011) designers have finally given into your need for comfort. Forget the saying ‘beauty is pain’. Throughout the runways from New York to Paris, a certain type of dress sense has been noticed. Silk, smooth, soft, yes thats right Pyjama style is in.

Celine

Does this mean you can get straight out of bed and head out of the house? No, but the comfort will still be there in this seasons must have outfit. So whats next underwear?

Prabal Gurung

New designer alert ! Prabal Gurung hit the fame streets after celebrities like Blake Lively, Demi Moore and First Lady Michelle Obama started wearing his clothes. The Nepalese designer is based in New York and showed his first collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2009. Quite brave for a designer to start a high end label at the start of a recession, but so far he is proving that it can be done and is wowing the fashion industry with his astounding collections. Even Vogue’s Anna Wintour felt a need to run an article about him. This brand is going to grow rapidly before our eyes.

Juan Carlos Obando

New designer alert ! Juan Carlos Obando swung the fashion industry with suprise when he started his brand in 2008. While working as an art director for advertising powerhouses, Obando taught himself how to construct a garment by cutting up vintage pieces. Once he understood and appreciated the work of tailoring, sewing, etc.. he felt it was time to start his own label.  Juan lives and works in Los Angeles and is apart of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). “We combine traditional Japanese, African and Latin American hand-dyeing techniques to create our signature hues and color palette.” This is a designer to be keeping your eye on.

The Art Of Colour

It’s time for colour to hit the streets again as Spring/Summer 2011’s biggest trend. From pink and yellow to blue and green, this trend is bound to get you into the summer feeling.

Vogue Italia Colour Shoot Feb 2011

Prada dipped into the trend by adding colour to boxy shapes and stripes creating a multicolour affect while Gucci went for a cleaner colour-blocking look inspired by the 1970’s. At Jil Sander, Raf Simon’s take on the trend was through prints of roses overlapping each other. There is plenty of choice for this trend that anyone can splurge into so do not be afraid.

Colour trend interpreted through stripes

For Men, look at Prada (boxy shapes again), Balenciaga for a monochrome look with pops of yellow, Tommy Hilfiger for a suit in any colour of the rainbow and Jil Sander again grabbing you deep into a kalediscope of vibrant colours.

Jil Sander SS/11 Menswear

If you absolutely hate colour and wish never to be seen in anything light and bright then try Bottega Venetta. Here Tomas Maier decided to be daring and disagree with this seasons biggest trend starting his show with….black. If you feel adventurous enough to continue to spread this trend, then I wish you a wonderful, cool and colourful season.
